Odysseas has had a meteoric rise showcasing the power of self-education to become a modern Renaissance man.
His secret weapon has been to learn and write using obsidian, which is the app he's personally crowned as the king of learning tools. But I question:
Is his advice also fit for the throne? This is because of two major criticisms i have:
First is his credibility. Is he really staying true to promoting proper self-education, or is he actually hindering it?
Second, from my 3 years of experience with using Obsidian for the same reason, I feel like his advice is outdated, oversimplified, and doesn't showcase Obsidian's true potential as a learning tool. so instead, I'll also be critiquing and improving his learning setup later in the video.

Bit disapointed here. He has explained that the most important take away is that there is NO perfect system. Every one has to set up his own worflow that matches hid needs. His other advise was to start as simple as possible. I also agree with this final advice : read the original book and UNDERSTAND the zettelkasten system.

I personally value both yours and Odysseas' setup as they both cover different personalities of self learning. In my opinion i don't feel its very fair to criticise his setup as others have pointed out it was built with the intent of being simplistic for those who needed it, in my position i much prefer your setup that fully utilises the flexibility of Obsidian. In short i believe its just two sides of a coin and in the end people will pick one or the other.

    • @itsjohnmavrick

i agree that both setups are viable depending on the person, and am glad you are still critiquing me despite preferring my setup :) i just wanted to bring light to how his initial setup video seemed to be replicable on most writing apps which fails to show why obsidian would be preferred over any of the other apps i mentioned in the video. and so, my extension of his setup being the extension. hope some of the plugins and points i made in the video was helpful food for thought for your own 🫡

Nice video, I like the structure. I owe some explanation for each part: 1. I should have referenced some videos, yep. I forgot where I first learned the evergreen tier system idea. I remember using Artem Kirsanov's guide as the technical backbone to mine. It's similar, which is why I thought to put a spin on the video by explaining why the app works in theory, and showing off my own alterations. 2. I should have mentioned MOCs too. I steer away from using new, unfamiliar terms in favour of something more people will have already encountered, like an index, but yeah I ought to have mentioned it. 3. I didn't compare to other zettelkastens because the video would be too long. The purpose was to show off my own process, not claim it was the best way to do it. There is no best way. 4. I call it the 'king of learning tools' because it's a catchy title, and since Obsidian is so flexible in its function, it has a fair claim. I'm sure there's loads of better apps out there, all similar in some ways. I'd be happy using Roam, Logseq, Kortex or anything else with the same basic features. 5. I'm aware my writing log is not sustainable over the long-term. It's a way for me to stay accountable in the short-term, not for long-term statistics. I plan to delete it all when it takes too long to scroll down and start fresh. Most of my temporary notes are just lists to store interesting topics to look into, so I don't worry about them getting large. My writing log was not part of the setup either -maybe I should have stressed that. 6. I wasn't aware of properties when I started this. They're good. Functionally the same for me, but still good. 7. The title in the note is repeated for visual separation of the note from the properties. It's true you don't need it. 8. I didn't say to avoid using plugins. I clarified how I only use two, and gave a warning against getting bogged down in the search for optimisation, especially early on. I expect people to explore and see what they can add, but only if and when it's not an excuse to avoid the purpose of the whole system. Use plugins, but with care. 9. In my source notes, I said I put page numbers for each idea mentioned. I only started this recently, so not all of them in the video may have had it, but that's how I can get more precise in referencing. Your method is good, but I prefer to rewrite or edit from my source notes to atomic notes. It's time consuming, but lets me improve the writing and understand it better through sheer effort. 10. The hotkey to move tags to the tag folder is fair. The strange new world plugin is also cool for the dropdown. 11. I can see how adding context to the indexes/MOCs is helpful, but I don't find this to be a problem in practice. I'm happy to just look into the note and reread it. 12. The custom view for tags and indexes is neat, but I don't see the point in my own workflow, at least for now. 13. The seedling-sprouts-trees system is not that important to me because I don't write detailed notes for the sake of writing detailed notes, but to help me understand ideas and have them eventually serve me in my writing. If there's a baby/seedling note I never revisit, that's fine -it probably never warranted a return to it. If I do return to it, I'll be sure to expand on it and upgrade the status. Again, this is purely personal preference. I don't like your system. It's too complicated, there's too many features and It feels like micromanaging every detail to me. But it's yours, not mine. If it works for you, it works. That's the core of PKM, and if this setup suits someone's mind more than mine does, they should use it without a scrap of hesitation. I hope that all makes sense. Bit of a long read, but I tried to be brief.

thank you for taking the time to watch the video and sharing your thoughts and clarifying some of the interpretations i misunderstood. i think my developer and productivity background is what compels me to the more over-engineered setup. even though the system as a whole is too complex for your liking, i hope there was a nugget or two that you might find useful for your own workflow 🫡

I have watched 5 or 6 Oddyseas videos and was really inspired by them (despite not doing anything with the information lol). I actually noticed a lot of the problems you brought up while just casually consuming his content because I've had to work on scaling systems in the past. This was honestly a great guide from the perspective of someone that is only a little past being a beginner. I like how it wasn't complete information overflow. I notice it a lot with "beginner" coding guides. A lot of people are WAY too quick to show the whole room before giving people time to look at the shelves.Thankfully, you explicitly avoided going too deep, skipping ancillary topics that could be looked into with a different resource and actually linking/making clear references to them. Another thing that I really appreciated was progressively introducing specific plugins to solve specific problems that you will run into not too long (within 6 months for example) after first attempting to implement the Zettle system. People tend to show all the plugins they use in a list at the start of a section, or god forbid the start of the damn video that is 20+ minutes long, without really explaining why it is applicable in detail (or once again, in way too much detail and 0 examples of application). It really makes me just throw all of it to the wayside thinking "I'll figure it out later". I never do. It also kind of promotes finding a solution to a problem you won't run into for a long time leading to installing too many plugins you just don't use. That's actually a massive problem with "Top 10 ObSidiAn pLugIns" types of videos. They're awful and just result in plugin creep. I'll be coming back to this video later, so I can actually change my obs setup. I had it on for some background noise while practicing typing. I didn't pay attention to everything, but I was listening to 80% of it and thought most of what I heard would solve problems I am actively running into. Thanks for putting up examples of other creators and platforms. I will be checking those out as well. This has turned from checking out a call out video to actually working on a new project. Thanks!

hey, just wanted to include a disclaimer and mention that my initial thumbnail and title for the video was extreme and uncalled for. i hope you can forgive my sensationalism and view the video as an extension of Odysseas's setup/video for people looking to have a more complex Obsidian zettelkasten setup.

@02thore This could’ve been a bts email creator to creator. As I stated, I find value in O’s content just as JM. This reads as being a show off for literally no reason. He could’ve (and still can) just uploaded these tutorials as intermediate or advanced pkm in obsidian. There is a thing called BEGINNER before you become advanced. Although he may not have unlocked obsidians full capabilities yet doesn’t mean he shouldn’t make content especially if people find it helpful. It’s catty for no reason. We should not make this a thing in pkm and there are creators for every audience. Just because one may be more advanced than another is not a valid reason to publicly accuse them of being a fraud simply because they are less experienced or learn differently. Sometime people just like the creator and that’s fine too. Requiring all obsidian creators to be at the same level or even capability is unreasonable and unnecessary. My suggestion would be to remove this, cut out personal opinions about what’s wrong with another creator’s methods, skills, and content, and reupload the parts giving great information on how to take Obsidian even further.

For anyone interested today in installing and using this app. These are the things that helped me stick with it & actually find some dopamine rewards i wouldnt normally feel after completing a task. As a veteran WoW player whos life became too hussy-bussy for the game. I decided to use Habitica to replicate the feeling of reward i used to get from completing WoW dailies. First off. Lets set up your habbits page. In habbits. Set up 3 to start with. Remove all the others. Set them up as the following. [Complete 5/5] daily tasks. Set your point reward to +10. This is your daily reward box ticker for once youve completed all of your daily tasks. In the "Daily" tab, set up 5 DAILY tasks that you want yoursrlf to do EVERY DAY. if you do 4/5 of these, but not the 5th, do not tick the habit box reward. It will "reset" each day, meaning if you fail, you can try again the next day. The habbit box we set up for this is a motivation to complete them all and receive huge points each day. This is your main source of progression. Secondly, the next habbit we are setting up is very similar, except these are for Weekly tasks. (Fueling up your car) for example. Or anything that should be done on a weekly basis. Mine is [Complete 3/3 weekly tasks] and its worth 15 points. Set up the reset counter for sunday. It will give you 7 days to get these tasks completed each week. And lastly, we want a habbit for Monthly tasks And go back to your daily tab and set up 3 tasks you should complete each month. This could be paying your phone or internet bill, health insurance or a deep clean of your car. Mine is [complete 3 monthly tasks] and ive got thr reward counter resetting once a month. Youve got 30 days to do this one. So the point reward should be high. My monthly tasks reward 30 points when theyre all done. You have the freedom to set it up however you want. And i believe the mechanics of this game are inherently punishing if you dont complete your tasks. Your character loses HP and doesnt progress. The trick to Habitica is to force the game systems to keep you accountable. Turn ON push notifications as well otherwise youll be missing out. If set up correctly, this game can replicate a personal accountabilty reminder. While also giving you justified rewards for remaining disciplined in your approach. Lastly dont be shy to add some negative value habbits. Thsy arent essential but can certainly help remind you of the bad behaviours and coping methods you dont want to keep.

I haven’t used Habitica since like 2016 . Not sure why I fell off (I didn’t use it for that long) but seeing the updates and how other ppl use it , has definitely given me insight to try again with different approach and to utilize all features. Definitely taking notes, thank you for the video Back then I was struggling with less , now I’m managing with more responsibility and can’t wait to see how I can use this to further my goals. I missed playing video games , I am scared of getting sucked into them so I avoid them cause they make me paranoid that I’m wasting time and become lazy. Really really love the spaces. Going to combine that with workspaces or just use those spaces tabs to have a nice few of all my subjects. It’s just honestly a bit frustrating to go through the documentation and settings. The „readable line width“ toggle does‘t do anything. Weird. What’s it supposed to do? Idk. What’s the subtext explaining? Ohhh it’s to „Use readable line width“ gotcha. There’s a empty Spaces folder created every time I start. (Not .spaces, Spaces). If you deactivate the navigator, where „you can create spaces“ you can still create spaces in.. the not-navigator? And all those flow inline blocks and whistles. Half don‘t work as expected but there’s no description of how or what exactly either. The slash commands depend on the core plugin. Good to know, thanks random Forum User, not thanks to a note in the settings. There’s an option to expand tree on folder click, cool. Stopped working halfway in my testing, needed to click twice. But please.. also collapse with the same method. It does it for spaces.. why not for folders in spaces 😢 Actions… are just weird. Insta infinite pop up loop created trying to see how to add a button to the navigator to add tags depending on folder. I‘m not in an ideal location, no internet on laptop, hotspot disconnects randomly… gonna join their discord and maybe add something to GitHub about all that, if I remember. And i damn love spaces, did I mention that. Your video already helped with a lot of their features. It’s always good to have a visual to a feature and setting. Thank you.
